This engagement of Luciane Dom is made possible in part through the Performing Arts Global Exchange program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts

The Story

Brazilian singer-songwriter Luciane Dom is part of a new generation of contemporary artists from Rio de Janeiro bringing socially conscious themes into their music. On her 2018 debut album, Liberte esse Banzo, she addressed issues of racial justice and the affirmation and recognition of black identity while exploring empowerment and her daily struggle as a black woman. Her work is multi-disciplinary, combining music and theater in her visually stunning music videos. Possessing a history degree from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, and Member of the Advisory Board of the US Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro, Luciane’s multilingual educational work revolves around masterclasses and interactive classes covering traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms including Ijexá and samba.

A world music artist in the truest sense of the word, the dynamic Ms. Dom has performed at major festivals and events such as IIE Honors at the World Trade Center (2022), Brasil Summerfest at Lincoln Center NYC (2023), Stanford Live (2024), Lotus Festival (2024) and many more. She has toured extensively, with four U.S. tours (2018–2024), performances in Chile (2019), and her Canadian debut in Toronto and Montreal (2022), solidifying her place as a rising star on the international world music scene.

The Sound

Luciane’s alluring vocals have graced several quintessentially Brazilian albums, including 2017’s Quanto Pesa?, 2018’s Liberte Esse Banzo, 2020’s Kabile (Ao Vivo), 2021’s Pode Ser às Dez and her most recent, 2023’s É Natal. Each is marked by an appealing blend of buoyant samba, bossa nova and forró from her native Brazil with elements of Afrobeat, reggae, R&B and jazz thrown into the mix. And she sells it all with a knowing smile and infectiously upbeat energy.
