Cape May, NJ (June 17, 2016) Â As Exit Zero Jazz Festival is celebrating its 5th Anniversary of presenting America’s original art form of Jazz in America’s original seaside resort of Cape May, NJ, producer Michael Kline announces the lineup for the 2016 Fall Edition of the Festival. Headlining on Saturday, November 12 is nine
time Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner, Wynton Marsalis. The internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator, and leading advocate of American culture, Marsalis returns to perform for the second year in a row at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, “The audiences for our concerts in Cape May were warm, responsive, and absolutely knowledgeable about jazz. The feeling was so communal and comfortable that the orchestra couldn’t help but swing.” He added, “This music may occupy a small space in our culture, but some gigs remind you that that space is worth battling over.” Kline remarks about the coup of presenting Wynton, ““We are thrilled that Wynton recognizes the deep appreciation for the music our audiences here at the Festival are known for. It’s an honor to have him return with the Quintet in November the performance is just one of a handful of Quintet shows in 2016.”
In her debut performance at the Festival and headlining the Schmidtchen Theater MusicConnects Stage on Friday, November 11 is the Grammy-winning vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. She is well known for her curiosity for the history of American music, and the connections between jazz, vaudeville, blues, and folk music. She pulls much of her repertoire from these rarely recorded gems with strong stories. The Squirrel Nut Zippers, who are touring in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their recording “Hot,” also perform on Friday, November 11 and draw much of their material from the same rare musical vaults mined by Cécile McLorin Salvant, albeit with a much different stage approach.
The Exit Zero Jazz Festival is a multi-venue festival with three full days of performances staged
in the 1,177 seat Schmidtchen Theater, the 750 seat Cape May Convention Hall and in the clubs of Cape May. A wide array of jazz and other genres of music are presented throughout the weekend as music lovers stroll between the venues, most of which line the Cape May beachfront. Featured artists include Omar Sosa JOG Trio, Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, Pat Martino Organ Trio + Horns, Frank Bey Blues Revue, The J?st Project, Jamison Ross, Red Baraat, High & Mighty Brass Band, Davis, New Orleans Swamp Donkeys, Jon Regen, Philadelphia Funk Authority, and still more to be announced July 1. With first-rate performances from award winning, critically acclaimed artists, exciting new talent and local favorites, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival has quickly become known as a premier Festival on the east coast, attractive to world class musicians, music aficionados, and new fans of the music.
Exit Zero Jazz Festival is produced by Spy Boy Productions, led by Michael Kline, who celebrated many summers in Cape May and returned in 2005 from New Orleans. He shares his thoughts about presenting the Festival in Cape May. He said, “We wanted to offer a world-class cultural experience in Cape May that would launch the shoulder seasons and let people know there is a vibrant, thriving community in Cape May beyond the incredible beaches and Victorian architecture. Through music, we celebrate the spirit and creative energy in Cape May, bringing a little of that New Orleans street party flavor to the beach. It’s always a great party, and we’re thrilled that people keep coming back for more.”
Named for the exit to Cape May off the Garden State Parkway, the festival attracts a loyal, diverse audience of thousands from the major metropolitan regions surrounding Cape May including New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., all within a four or five- hour drive of Cape May. The Festival features Grammy Award-winners, living legends, NEA Jazz Masters, emerging jazz stars, international musicians and home-grown talent too. The Festival is supported through the efforts of Festival Presenters: Motéma Music and Exit Zero Magazine,
and stage sponsors Chris Clemans Sotheby’s Realty, The Whale’s Tale, It’s a Breeze, Hawk Haven
Vineyard + many other Cape May & Cape May County businesses.
